DEEPLY RELAXING, HOLISTIC, AND MEDITATIVE SHIATSU
Shiatsu literally means "finger pressure" in Japanese. At once both powerful and gentle, shiatsu is a deeply relaxing and effective form of treatment. This holistic Japanese therapy is based on the long-standing, well-refined tradition of acupressure, incorporating stretches, focused pressure, and soothing massage techniques. Shiatsu balances the nervous system and calms the mind. Clients often report sleeping exceptionally well after a session.
In the 1990s, I taught introductory shiatsu courses for the Workers’ Educational Association. In the early 2000s, I worked as an expert for Viking Line’s shiatsu-themed cruises between Sweden and Finland. Shiatsu treatments are traditionally performed on a futon—made of natural fibers—while the client wears comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. The futon, originating from Japan, is specifically designed for shiatsu bodywork.
Experiencing Japanese shiatsu is a deeply calming and meditative journey. It activates the body’s natural healing resources and comprehensively supports your health and well-being. Shiatsu is also an inner cultural voyage to old-world Japan—offering a profound sense of peace and inner stillness. I bring over 35 years of experience as a shiatsu therapist. You are warmly welcome.
HISTORY OF SHIATSU 指圧
Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese healing method over 1,000 years old. Its roots lie in Chinese folk medicine, particularly the acupoint knowledge that has been practiced for at least 3,000 years—if not longer. The term shiatsu itself dates to the 20th century. "Shi" means thumb, and "atsu" means pressure—thus: shiatsu (指圧). The spirit and tradition of shiatsu emphasize calmness, unhurried presence, genuine kindness, and compassion.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SHIATSU TREATMENT?
The treatment is performed on a comfortable futon designed specifically for shiatsu, or alternatively on a massage table if needed. The client lies fully relaxed for the entire session. A full-body holistic shiatsu session lasts about 1.5 hours. The client wears a light shirt and, for example, soft tracksuit pants. The treatment is a meditative experience—a journey into deep presence. Unnecessary talking is avoided during the session.
Shiatsu includes focused pressure, stretches for the legs and arms, rhythmic shaking, varied massage techniques, and stimulation of acupoints (tsubos) along meridian lines. The treatment balances and calms both body and mind, creating a state of meditative relaxation. I always tailor the pressure to suit your condition and stop well before any discomfort arises. Shiatsu does not use needles; instead, pressure is applied with thumbs, knees, elbows, knuckles, or even the soles of the feet.
HOW DOES SHIATSU AFFECT YOU?
Shiatsu is a comprehensive form of body therapy with a wide range of benefits. It releases tension, calms the nervous system, and eases both physical and emotional stress. Many clients seek help with neck and shoulder tension, back pain, sleep issues, fatigue, and general exhaustion. One clear effect of shiatsu is improved metabolism. Many come simply for its energizing, empowering, and balancing influence on the entire being. The deeply meditative and relaxed state achieved during treatment is itself restorative. Clients often report feeling emotionally lighter and more at ease for days afterward, along with relief from pain and tension, a peaceful mind, and a sense of openness and vitality.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF SHIATSU
Shiatsu’s stretches, rhythmic movements, and pressure techniques revitalize the body and muscles. Regular sessions help prevent injuries and movement restrictions, while supporting good posture. Over the years, many clients have shared how shiatsu strengthens the joy of movement and physical self-expression.
The stimulation of acupoints and enhanced circulation can also improve digestion. The deep relaxation achieved through shiatsu balances the nervous system and enhances your ability to manage stress. These benefits often reflect throughout your whole being. After a full-body treatment, clients typically feel more refreshed, resilient, and vibrant. For many, one of the welcome side effects is improved ability to fall asleep and sleep more deeply.
Shiatsu is a gentle form of body therapy. If you have a serious medical condition or strong medications, consult your doctor about whether shiatsu can support your health. Generally, it works well as a complementary treatment for health promotion and alleviating a variety of issues. Ideally, balancing shiatsu sessions would be taken weekly or at least monthly to maintain well-being.
MY PATH WITH SHIATSU
I graduated as a Certified Shiatsu Therapist from the Finnish Shiatsu School in 1990. Since then, I have studied with several teachers and explored other holistic body therapies as well. In the 1990s, I ran a shiatsu practice alongside my verbal therapy work, with offices in Malmi, Munkkiniemi, and Kallio. In 1997, I found a welcoming 100m² practice space near Helsinki’s Central Station, where I still work today.
I’ve taught shiatsu basics in TYHY (occupational well-being) trainings and given introductory sessions. In earlier years, I also gave shiatsu treatments on cruise ships and lectured on the history and various schools of shiatsu on the Helsinki–Stockholm route.
In 2020, I reopened my shiatsu practice. I now focus solely on 2-hour full-body shiatsu treatments, ensuring each client has ample time to relax deeply and receive the full benefit of the work. You are warmly welcome to experience the deeply relaxing and meditative power of shiatsu.
